Dvadeset i drugo stoljeće
The twenty-second century
Pametna naša djeca
Već su spasila
Zemlju od ljudi
Mrtve od živih
Vjeru od religija
Vratila okus hrani
Odvojila pravdu
Od istine
A istinu od točnosti
Također, a što je
Jednako važno,
Odvojila su zauvijek
Ljubav od obaveze
I užitak u njoj
Od razmnožavanja
Svaku djevojčicu na romobilu
Svakog dječaka i njegova psa
Stavila su ispred države i nacije
Našla su
– To i nije bio problem –
Način
Da svi imaju krov
Nad glavom
Da svi jedu
Voće i povrće
I imaju pravo na
Dobre bolnice
Najbolje što
Možemo
Napraviti za sebe
Kažu ta djeca
Koja se, evo, upravo rađaju
Jest zbrinuti
Pogotovo lijene
Posebno glupe
Osobito slabe
A ponajviše nesposobne
Čemu inače naš talent
I znanje
Naša strast za radom
Snaga i vještina
Mudra naša djeca
Kao da i nisu naša
Otvorila su granice
I ponovo je došlo
Šašavo vrijeme
Otključanih vrata
Osigurala su svima
Sate za knjige
I večeri za kino
Nešto novca za
Putovanja
Prekrojila su sve
Imperative u
Ne osuđuj
I ne budi kreten
Učinila su to
Bez diktature
(Ako se uzme
U obzir
Da obrazovanje
Nije diktatura)
Njihovi zatvori
Nalik su na škole
A što ne može znanost
Može poezija
Kakvi su procesi
Doveli do toga
I je li palo
Više krvi nego
Što svakodnevno pada
Da bi svijet konačno
Postao normalno mjesto
Da bi život konačno postao
Vrijedan življenja
– Nećemo saznati
Jer nećemo vidjeti
Dvadeset i drugo stoljeće
Mi još stignemo samo
Učiti od te djece
Koja se nisu ni rodila
Stignemo posaditi
Limun na trgu
I gledati kako raste
Bez obzira na posljedice
Reći strancu da je
Dobrodošao
Zaboraviti neprijatelje
I ostarjeti
Među prijateljima
Mi još stignemo
Pročitati stotinjak knjiga
Pedeset puta zapjevati
I iako izgleda beznadno
Glasati
Uvijek za ljevičare
Mi se još možda stignemo
I sresti
I poljubiti pred svijetom
Što misliš
Ako sve ovo napravimo
Hoće li brže doći to
Dvadeset i drugo stoljeće
Those clever kids of ours
Already saved
The Earth from people
Dead from the living
Faith from religions
They reintroduced flavor into foods
Separated justice
From truth
And truth from exactness
In addition, and
Just as important,
They separated, for all eternity,
Love from duty
And joy of love from
Reproduction
Every girl on a scooter
Every boy and his dog
Were prioritized over the state and nation
Also, they found
– Which wasn’t a problem –
A way for everyone
To have a roof
Over their heads
To eat
Fruits and vegetables
And have a right to
Quality healthcare
The best that
We can
Do for ourselves
Those children are saying
Children that are just being born
Is to make sure that
Especially the lazy ones
Specifically the stupid
Particularly the weak
And above all the incompetent are provided for
Otherwise what’s the point of all of our talent
And knowledge
And our passion for achievement
And our strength and skill
Those sage kids of ours
As if they’re not ours at all
Opened up all borders
And the crazy age of
Unlocked doors
Was upon us again
Ensuring
Plenty of time for reading
Free evenings for movie-going
And modest travel funds
For everyone
They converted all the
Imperative mode statements into just two:
Do not judge and
Don’t be an asshole
They did all that
Without dictatorship
(Assuming
Of course
That good education
Is not dictatorial)
Their prisons
Resemble schools
And what can’t be achieved through science
Is left to poetry
What processes
Precipitated all those changes
And did it take
More blood than
Usual
For the world to finally become
Normal
For life to finally become
Worth living
–We shall never find out
For we shall never see
The twenty-second century
All we have time for is
Learn from those children
Who aren’t even born yet
Find time to plant
A lemon tree in a square
And watch it grow
No matter the consequences
Tell strangers that they’re
Welcome
Lose track of our enemies
And grow old
Among friends
We do still find time to
Read a hundred or so books
Burst into a song about fifty times
And although it seems hopeless
Vote
Always for the left
We might still even find time to
Meet
And kiss in front of everyone
What do you think
If we did all that
Would the twenty-second century
Come any sooner
